White Sox Send RHPs Scott Carroll, Jacob Turner To Triple-A

(CBS) The White Sox trimmed their spring roster to 29 players Wednesday, as they optioned right-hander Scott Carroll and outrighted right-hander Jacob Turner to Triple-A Charlotte.

Turner had an outside chance at winning a back-end rotation spot, but he pitched poorly and was beaten out by new addition Mat Latos. Turner had a 10.50 ERA in 12 innings in the Cactus League, allowing opponents to hit .377. Carroll posted a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings.

Manager Robin Ventura has confirmed the team will open the season with seven relievers, so the demotion of Carroll appears to set the bullpen in place: David Robertson, Zach Duke, Zach Putnam, Matt Albers, Dan Jennings, Jake Petricka and Nate Jones.

In a formality, the White Sox also purchased the contract of Jimmy Rollins, who has had a monster spring and earned the starting shortstop job.
