White Sox Call Up Putnam, Designate Veal For Assignment

(CBS) -- After seeing four different pitchers walk a batter in a single inning last night, the White Sox made a change in their bullpen before Thursday night's series finale against the Red Sox.

Right-hander Zach Putnam had his contract purchase from Triple-A Charlotte, while left-hander Donnie Veal was designated for assignment.

Veal had walked seven batters and allowed five earned runs in just six innings already this season, prompting the move. With Veal gone, Scott Downs is the only left-hander in the White Sox's bullpen.

Putnam, 26, did not allow an earned run in six innings with Charlotte before getting called up. In fact, he had allowed only four hits and one walk.

Putnam has pitched in 15 innings in the major leagues in career after spending time with the Indians, Rockies and Cubs over the last three seasons. He signed with the White Sox as a free agent on Nov. 27, 2013 and will wear No. 57.
