Wheeling Police Officer's Vehicle Fatally Strikes Pedestrian

WHEELING, Ill. (STMW) -- A Wheeling police officer's vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Sunday morning in the northwest suburb.

The on-duty officer was involved in a crash that injured a male pedestrian about 5:45 a.m. on McHenry Road, just west of Cedar Run Drive, police said in a statement. The pedestrian, whose age was not immediately known, was later pronounced dead at the scene. Police could not provide details Sunday morning on how many vehicles were involved in the accident.

The pedestrian's identity was withheld pending notification of his family, police said.

McHenry Road was closed between Lexington Drive and Weiland Road as of 9:45 a.m.
