West Side Residents Say Garbage Piling Up At Abandoned House
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Frustration is building, along with a pile of trash in one South Austin block. That trash, at an abandoned house in is now a breeding ground for rodents and disease.
CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports the alley garage is the neighborhood scourge.
"It's like it's becoming a dumping ground. So anyone who comes past -- oh I got garbage let me just throw it on over here," said Sabrina Grayer.
In the window of the shuttered home, there's an Alderman Ervin campaign sign.
"This has been on our radar," said a spokesperson from his office. "It's a hazard."
It was once, says the sign, the Hampton Youth Service Center. Now it's a haven for rats and cats.
The alderman's office said last month they officially filed a complaint. Tuesday night Streets and Sanitation says they were there and cleaned it up on April 30 and will go back and do it again Wednesday. The Department of Buildings received its first 311 request Monday and will inspect the building Wednesday, which means the it could mean anything from boarding up to the wrecking ball.
