Woman Killed, Husband And Baby Wounded In West Pullman Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 33-year-old woman was killed, her 34-year-old husband was critically wounded, and their 1-year-old boy was shot in the knee, when someone shot up their car in the West Pullman neighborhood early Monday morning.
Police said the victims were sitting in a parked car near 117th and Laflin around 12:40 a.m., when someone in a dark-colored sedan pulled up and opened fire.
The woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead. The man was taken to the University of Chicago trauma center, where he was in critical condition. The baby was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
The victims' names have not been released, but police confirmed the man and woman were married, and the baby is their son.
A cousin of the victims said a 14-year-old girl who also was in the car was not wounded.
At an unrelated news conference, Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said detectives have not been able to speak to the husband, because he's on a breathing tube at the hospital.
"Right now, we don't have a whole lot to go on," he said.
Neighbors said they heard at least eight gunshots, and a car pulling away from the scene.
"I did hear a young lady, she was screaming, and then I did see a gentleman that had gotten out of the car, and was walking around, looking as though he was stumbling," said a woman who asked to remain anonymous.
Neighbors said they are shocked to hear about a shooting on what's normally a quiet block.
"I can't fathom the fact of me just getting in my car, coming home, about to get out, preparing myself to get out of my car, and someone comes by and just shoots you. It's unbelievable, but in Chicago that's the normal now," Michelle Palm-Louis said.
No one was in custody Monday morning. Area South detectives were investigating.
