5 Killed, 10 Wounded In Shootings In First 12 Hours Of Weekend

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Five people were shot to death and 10 others were wounded in a 12-hour span across the city from Friday evening to early Saturday.

Officers received a call of shots fired in the 4800 block of West Monroe in Austin just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday and found a 23-year-old man lying face down, police said. He was shot several times and was dead at the scene.

About 3:40 a.m., a man was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting in the 1300 block of West Hastings in University Village, police said.

One man, 24, was shot in the back and was pronounced dead UIC Hospital, police said.

One man, 29, was shot in both thighs, his hand a forearm. The other man, 30, was shot in the hand. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital where their conditions stabilized, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office did not confirm the two most recent deaths Saturday morning.

Two men, both 19, were in a vehicle in the first block of South Springfield in West Garfield Park about 1:30 a.m. when they were shot, police said.

One man was shot in the abdomen and was dead at the scene, police said. The other was shot in right leg and listed in good condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Late Friday, a man was fatally shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

The 22-year-old was shot in the neck about 10:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Kirkland, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner's office confirmed both deaths but didn't release additional details Saturday morning.

The weekend's first fatal shooting occurred in West Englewood.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head just after 9 p.m. by two males who approached the vehicle he was riding in, police said. At the time of the shooting, the vehicle was going down an alley in the 6500 block of South Hamilton Avenue.

Police said the teen, identified by his mother as Melvin Cook, was pronounced dead at the scene, though the medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

Police said the driver ran away from the vehicle after the shooting.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred on Lake Shore Drive in the Lakeview neighborhood.

A 27-year-old man walked into Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the foot just before 5:30 a.m., police said. He told investigators he was shot in the 3200 block of North Lake Shore Drive.

His condition had stabilized Saturday morning, though additional details were not immediately available, police said.

At least six other people have been shot in Chicago since since 5 p.m. Friday.
