Chicago Weekend Shootings: 7 dead, 21 wounded during New Year's weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least seven people are dead, and 21 others were wounded in shootings over the New Year's weekend. The ages of the victims range from 9 to 55.

In one fatal shooting police are still investigating, a 9-year-old boy was killed when he was fatally shot inside a home on Chicago's South Side. The shooting happened in the 9400 block of South Wallace Street around 6:30 p.m., and there were multiple children and adults in the home, according to Commander Sean Joyce of the 22nd District. Police said the victim was with his extended family. 

The child was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Joyce said it is unclear how many gunshot wounds the boy suffered or who fired the shots. Detectives were still conducting interviews as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday. No gun had yet been reocvered. 

"It's too early to tell about negligence involved," Joyce said. 

In the first shooting of the weekend, two men were found shot and killed inside a home on the city's South Side Friday.

The shooting happened in the 8600 block of South Constance Avenue in the Stoney Island neighborhood around 10:30 p.m.

Police say officers responded to a person shot and found the men, 23 and 30, with multiple gunshot wounds.

Witnesses in other parts of the house heard a loud disturbance followed by multiple shots fired, police said.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Hospital.

About an hour later, a 25-year-old man was shot while putting gas in his car in the 4700 block of West West End around 11:32 p.m.

The victim was filling his car with gas on the side of the road when he heard multiple shots fired and felt pain.

He was shot in both legs and was transported to Stroger Hospital where he is listed in good condition. 

Three men were shot while walking in an alley in Wicker Park early Saturday morning.

The shooting happened in the 1400 block of North Honore Street around 2:07 a.m.

Police said the men, 26, 38, and 28, were walking in the alley when an unknown suspect approached the victims armed with a handgun.

The suspect began shouting at the men before firing multiple shots and fleeing the scene, police said.

The 26-year-old victim was shot twice in the chest and was transported to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.

The 38-year-old victim was shot multiple times in the torso and was also transported to Stroger. The 28-year-old victim was struck on the groin and abdomen and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital. Both are in critical condition.

In another incident, a 10-year-old was shot in the face on Chicago's South Side. The boy and several other children were in the living room/attic of a home in the 4700 block of South Ada around 7:20 p.m. when the weapon was discharged, police say. The boy was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition. 

On New Year's Day one teen was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting in the Washington Park neighborhood. Chicago Police Deputy Chief Chris Papaioannou said four teens were riding in a stolen silver Kia in the 5600 block of South Prairie around 1:19 p.m., when another vehicle pulled up and fired several shots into the vehicle, striking each of the occupants. The victims range in age from 14 to 17. One boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The three others were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition.

In another fatal incident, a 52-year-old man was shot on a sidewalk in the city's Austin neighborhood. The victim was found with a gunshot wound to the head and chest in the 5000 block of West Superior Street, and was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

  • At 5:10 a.m. Saturday, in the 900 block of North Lawler, two men, 47 and 48, were outside when two unknown suspects approached and began to fire shots in their direction. The 47-year-old was grazed in the left leg and the 48-year-old was shot in the left ankle. Both were transported to Stroger in good condition.
  • At 5:13 a.m. Saturday, in the 2700 block of West Touhy Avenue, four unknown suspects entered a retail business and approached the cash register. One of the suspects shot in the direction of the victim, a 27-year-old man, at which time they took an unknown amount of money from the register and fled the scene. The victim was taken to Saint Francis Hospital with one gunshot wound to his right leg in stable condition. 
  • At 11:59 a.m. Saturday, in the 12600 block of South Stewart Avenue, a 39-year-old woman was driving when she heard shots and felt pain. The victim sustained a graze wound to the upper back and refused EMS on the scene. Victim self-transported to Ingalls Hospital in good condition.
  • At 1:41 p.m. Saturday, In the 100 block of East 103rd Street, a man , 55, was inside of a vehicle when he was approached by an unknown vehicle, and an occupant from within fired shots. The victim was struck to the facial area and self-transported to Roseland Hospital in serious condition. 
  • At 12:08 a.m. Sunday, in the 11400 block of South Racine Avenue, a woman, 24, was inside a residence when she was discovered with a gunshot wound to the left foot and was transported to Christ hospital in critical condition. The victim was uncooperative with officers about the incident and did not answer any questions.
  • At 12:31 a.m. Sunday, in the 4800 block of West Madison Street, a man was standing outside of his vehicle when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the groin and was transported to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 12:06 a.m. Sunday, in the 6500 block of South Paulina Street, a man, 27, was standing on his porch when he felt pain in his back. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the lower back and was transported to Advocate Christ in good condition.
  • At 12:06 a.m. Sunday, in the 5200 block of South May Street, a man was standing on the porch when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the left hand and was transported to U of C hospital in good condition.
  • At 1:30 a.m. Sunday, in the 2100 block of West Division Street, an unknown man attempted to enter a business by force while brandishing a handgun where there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the victims. The offender then fled the business and entered an unknown vehicle and fled the area. One person was shot in the legs, abdomen, and shoulder and was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead. The second person was shot in the left calf and was transported to Stroger in good condition.
  • At 4:30 a.m. Sunday, in the 3800 block of South Wallace, officers responded to a person shot and discovered a 30-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds at the above location. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced. 
  • At 8:50 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of East 132nd Street, a 20-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when someone in a dark colored sedan started shooting. The victim was struck in the left foot and transported to Roseland Hospital in fair condition. 
  • At 8:35 p.m. on Sunday in the 0-100 block of East 59th Street, two women were in a fight when one of the shot the other. They then struggled for the handgun, and two more shots were fired, striking the original shooter. The 33-year-old victim sustained a gunshot to the right leg and self transported to St. Bernard's Hospital in good condition. The original shooter, 34, was shot twice in the leg and self transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
