Chicago Weather: Strong Storms Roll Across Chicago Area

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A narrow band of powerful storms swept over the Chicago area Saturday afternoon, bringing wind gusts of up to 60 mph, prompting a warning for sailors on Lake Michigan.

The National Weather Service said small boats could be damaged by strong wind gusts, and boaters should move to safe harbor until the storm passes.

The storm also prompted a severe thunderstorm warning in DuPage County, which lasted for about 20 minutes before it expired. Forecasters warned the storm could cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

The storm system also brings threats of damaging hail, with only a small tornado risk west of the city.

Temperatures had reached the upper 70s, and could hit the low 80s this afternoon, but the storms will cool temperatures dramatically.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the temperature at O'Hare Airport was 78 degrees, but an hour later, the temperature had plunged to 67, after the storm moved through the city.

Several more rounds of storms are expected tonight and tomorrow. Storms could continue on Sunday, with highs in the mid 70s, before colder air settles in on Monday, with highs around 60.
