Waukegan Teachers Strike Continues; Threat Looms In Hinsdale

(CBS) – A teachers strike in Waukegan continued this week after negotiations failed to yield an agreement with the school district.

Representatives for teachers and the Board of Education met for several hours Monday. Both parties were expected to resume Tuesday, Waukegan Community School District 60 said in a news release.

"While an agreement was not reached during today's 12 hours of negotiations, much headway was made," the district said.

Meanwhile, teachers complained that no board members attended the bargaining session Monday.

"We are working tirelessly to reach an agreement so we can get our kids back in school. It is up to the Board to come to the table and hammer out a deal with us that is fair for teachers, students, and the community," Waukegan Teachers' Council President Kathy Schwarz said in a news release.

The strike began last Thursday in a dispute over wages and benefits.

The threat of a similar teachers strike loomed in Hinsdale Township High School District 86.

Some parents lobbied the school board Monday evening to accept teacher demands for pay raises.
