Waukegan Music Teacher Had Sexual Relationship With Minor: Authorities

(CBS) – A music teacher at a Waukegan middle school is accused of having a sexual relationship with a minor, police and prosecutors say.

Briana Travis, 33, of Mundelein is charged with three counts of criminal sexual assault and is being held in Lake County jail on $1 million bond following a Friday court appearance.

Police say a tip from a parent about inappropriate texting between a student and Travis led them to the Webster Middle School music teacher. When Waukegan police detectives interviewed Travis, she confessed to having an inappropriate relationship with another minor, authorities said.

Travis allegedly began the relationship with the minor during the previous school year.

"The details of these allegations are abhorrent. Any behaviors that compromise the safety and well-being of our students, and/or the trust of our community, will not and cannot be tolerated," Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 said in a written statement.

The district said Travis is on administrative leave. Her next court appearance is Nov. 3.
