Water Department Workers Fall Into Trench Escaping Cars In Police Chase

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two Water Department workers ended up in a trench early Friday morning, while trying to avoid being struck by a car involved in a police chase in the South Deering neighborhood.

Police said officers were pursuing suspects in a stolen vehicle around 12:40 a.m., when their pursuit brought them to the 1500 block of East 95th Street, where the Water Department employees were working on a construction project.

As the cars approached the construction site, the two workers saw the vehicles coming right at them, and jumped out of the way, landing in the trench.

Firefighters and paramedics pulled them out of the trench using stretchers, and took the workers to Advocate Trinity Hospital. Their injuries were not life threatening.

Police said the suspects got away, so no one was in custody Friday morning.
