Woman Shot And Killed While Sleeping In Washington Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 40-year-old woman was shot and killed while she was sleeping in her apartment early Tuesday in the Washington Park neighborhood.

According to police, a man walked up to an apartment at 53rd and King around 5:30 a.m., and fired 5 to 6 shots into the window, hitting 40-year-old Rhonda Hughes as she was asleep on her couch.

Hughes was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:26 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Police said they don't believe Hughes, a mother of three, was the intended target; but someone in her apartment might have been.

Neighbors who heard the shots expressed their condolences to Hughes' family.

"We had no knowledge that it was our neighbor that's down in the basement. So our prayers are going out to her and her family and loved ones; that she's safe, and it's okay, and they find the culprits," Tyrone Jackson said.

No one was in custody Tuesday morning. Area Central detectives were investigating.

Police said witnesses provided only a vague description of the suspect, a man in his 20s wearing all red.
