Wanted: Volunteer Drivers To Take Cancer Patients To Treatment

(CBS) -- The American Cancer Society is putting out a call for volunteers, especially in the Chicago metro area, who would like to drive cancer patients to treatment.

Trish Pangilinan with Mission Delivery says they serve cancer patients who don't always have a ride to their appointment. Friends and family help get these patients to some of the treatment appointments, but not all of them, she says.

"Transportation is the second biggest barrier cancer patients report to not completing their treatment on time," Pangilinan says.

Demand for the service is large in Cook County because of the large population, she says.

Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles. If you'd like to apply, go the American Cancer Society website to be matched with a patient. Volunteers can be screened, trained and ready to go within a couple of weeks.
