Wadsworth Home Destroyed In Extra-Alarm Blaze

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A four-alarm fire destroyed a house in far north suburban Wadsworth early Wednesday morning, after burning for nearly three hours.

The fire started around 4 a.m. in home at MacIntosh Court and Orchard Bluff Lane. At least 20 trucks from various area fire departments responded to the blaze, including crews from Zion, Beach Park, and some towns in Wisconsin.

Newport Township Fire Protection District Chief Mark Kirchoffer said flames were through the roof when firefighters first arrived at the scene. It was raised to a four-alarm fire mainly to bring in help from nearby departments that have water tankers, to help truck in water, as there are no hydrants in the subdivision where the house is located.

"Approximately 23 departments were involved in the fire attack, again primarily for water supply," he said.

The fire was not brought under control until around 6:30 a.m., and was extinguished by 7 a.m., but by then the home had been completely destroyed.

There were no reports of injuries.

Real estate listings indicated the five-bedroom, 5,100-square-foot house went up for sale last month for $750,000.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
