Volunteer Projects To Highlight Martin Luther King Day
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Do not fire a gun today. That's the message from the daughter of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Bernice King was urging people worldwide to make Dr. Martin Luther King Day a "no shots fired" day to implement her father's message of non-violence.
That's not the only way people are being encouraged to remember Dr. King.
CBS 2's Susanna Song reports a group of volunteers in Rogers Park will fix up a local school as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Monday morning, about 750 volunteers from all over Chicago will converge at Sullivan High School and Kilmer Elementary School to clean, paint, and renovate the hallways and classrooms.
All across the country, hundreds of thousands of people will partake in the MLK Day of Service.
The plan is to celebrate the life of Dr. King through service to others. The civil rights leader once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?"
On Monday, Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH coalition will hold its annual MLK scholarship breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel downtown. The breakfast is at 8 a.m., followed by volunteer projects from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
