View: Illinois To Wear 'Gray Ghost' Uniforms To Honor Red Grange

(CBS) The Illinois football team will wear "Gray Ghost" alternate uniforms to honor Illini legend Red Grange in its homecoming game against Minnesota on Oct. 25, the school has announced.

Considered the greatest player in Illinois history and by many as the best college football player of all time, Grange was nicknamed the "Gray Ghost" by famous writer Grantland Rice. The uniforms honor the 90th anniversary of Grange's historic homecoming performance on Oct. 18, 1924, when he scored five touchdowns and threw for another to lead Illinois to a 39-14 victory against Michigan.

You can check out photos of the uniforms above and below, courtesy of the Illinois athletic department.

Illinois is currently 3-4 and 0-3 in the Big Ten. The Illini are on a bye this week before facing the Gophers.
