Video Shows Would-Be Robber Flee After Des Plaines Store Owner Takes Out Gun

(CBS) -- Dramatic surveillance video shows a teen pull out a gun on a shop owner, and what happened next helped put an end to a suburban crime spree, police said.

CBS 2's Mike Parker reports two 16-year-old boys are now facing robbery charges.

Surveillance video shows a teen in a blue hooded sweatshirt enter the Nuevo Mexico grocery store in Des Plaines last Saturday. He goes to the counter and lays down the candy bar, then pulls a gun.

But the owner takes a few steps then pulls his own gun. The suspect takes one look then flees the store. The owner fires three shots, but does not hit him.

Outside the store, witnesses gave police a description of the getaway car driven by an accomplice. Two hours later, the car was spotted outside a nearby beauty salon.

Police say the gunman was inside getting a haircut. Both teens were arrested and later admitted sticking up a Dunkin' Donuts, where one of the two walked with a limp.

"He had a shotgun down his pants leg, that's why he was walking with a limp," said Des Plaines Police Chief Bill Kushner. "They're not strangers by any stretch of the imagination."
