Valparaiso Woman Loses Custody Of Kids For 2nd Time

VALPARAISO, Ind. (STMW) -- A Northwest Indiana woman, who told police she had just gotten back custody of her children, had them taken from her again Wednesday night during a trip to Dunkin Donuts.

At about 9:25 p.m., an employee working the drive-through lane at the restaurant , 6532 U.S. 6, had trouble understanding a customer because she was slurring her words.

The employee delayed the driver and called police, saying the woman, who had three small children in her minivan, either was drunk or was having some kind of medical problem.

When police arrived, 31-year-old Crystal Camacho, of Valparaiso, failed field sobriety tests. Officers arrested her for felony operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a controlled substance.

She tested positive for two medications for which she was prescribed, plus for an additional controlled substance for which she was not. Camacho, who reported chronic back problems, allegedly admitted receiving a narcotic painkiller from a relative, according to the police report.

Her passenger, Richard Camacho, 27, of the same Valparaiso address, was arrested on an active Starke County civil warrant for failure to pay child support.

The children, a 3-month-old, a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, were taken by the Indiana Department of Child Services.
