Urban League Calls For Feds To Investigate Chicago Police Department

(CBS) -- The Chicago Urban League is asking the federal government to investigate the Chicago Police.

Mayor Emanuel has said this is about one man - Jason Van Dyke - the police officer who shot Laquan McDonald.

But Shari Runner, the interim president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League, says it's about much more than that.

"It is about one cop that shot this young man 16 times in 15 seconds, but it's also about the code of silence and it's also about the culture of the police that allows this to happen and be covered up for 13 months as well," Runner said.

The Chicago Urban League is asking the U.S. Department of Justice to begin a "pattern and practice" investigation - ending with a corrective action plan which could mean, essentially, that the federal government would oversee the Chicago Police Department for awhile.

Runner says the Urban League is also calling for the firing of Police Superintendent McCarthy.
