Winter Weather Advisory For Far Northern, Western Suburbs; 115 Flights Canceled At O'Hare

CHICAGO (CBS) -- As temperatures drop through the rest of the day on Monday, rain will turn to snow, and the far northern and western suburbs could get up to 3 inches by Tuesday.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Lake, McHenry, Kane, and DeKalb counties, and most of the rest of northern Illinois west and north of Chicago, from 9 a.m. Monday until midnight Tuesday morning.

At O'Hare, more than 115 flights have been canceled and delays up to 50 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation. There have been a few flight cancelations at Midway, with delays of forty minutes.

Snowfall will be heavier and last longer along the Wisconsin border, and in northwestern Illinois, with accumulations of 2 to 3 inches. Closer to the city, on a line from Waukegan to Aurora, accumulations will be closer to 1 to 2 inches, while the city and southern suburbs likely will see an inch or less.

CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports it snowed intermittently in Lake County Monday afternoon, resulting in about an inch or so of snow in grassy areas but not much sticking on roads or sidewalks.

The biggest issue as the temperatures fell and the snow began to fly was the winds, with gusts of 20 to 30 miles an hour that had flags snapping and snow blowing around open areas.

For the rest of the holiday week, it will be cold, but mostly clear, with temperatures in the 20s all week, except Wednesday, when the high will be 35. On Thanskgiving Day, the high will be around 22 degrees.
