James Lewis Fatally Shot Trying To Rescue Niece From Alleged Attacker In Chatham

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A teenager is said to have screamed for help after she was assaulted by a man in her bedroom just after 9 p.m. Thursday.

Police first said the 17-year-old was in her bedroom, on East 89th Place, when a man entered the house through the window. The attack turned deadly when that girl's uncle stepped in. The suspect fatally shot 66-year-old James Lewis.

Police have a possible suspect in custody, who was arrested after running away from the scene.

But Friday afternoon, the Chicago Police Department said the man had been invited to the home by the victim. Detectives found inconsistencies in the initial story, and the investigation is continuing.

The uncle was taken to University of Chicago Hospital where he died.

This is a developing story.
