Uncertainties Arise After CTU's Contract Deal With CPS

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The head of the Chicago Teachers Union said she is satisfied with the contract deal worked out with Chicago Public School system. But, she said there are still some uncertainties.

The new Teachers Union contract leaves the Chicago Public Schools budget with a couple hundred-million-dollar hole to be filled with money from the state. Schools CEO Forest Claypool said he is confident the Governor and Illinois lawmakers will come through. But, Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis is not banking on it.

Lewis said she is not confident about anything she cannot see. She said she can pray for the money, just as she is praying for a Chicago Cubs World Series victory.

Still in a speech to the City Club of Chicago, she said she does believe CPS officials who have promised to work more closely with the union on financial matters.

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis thinks the contract agreement with CPS is a good one for teachers, and Mayor Emanuel's made a commitment to help the CTU find funding for sustainable community schools.

But, in a speech to the City Club of Chicago, she said there are still some hard feelings among teachers. She said there is still mistrust among CPS, teachers, and parents.
