UIC Student Charged With Threatening To Kill U Of C Students, Staff Released To Mother's Custody

(CBS) -- The 21-year old man accused of threatening to kill 16 white students and staff at the University of Chicago is in his mother's custody.

Jabari Dean, an electrical engineering student at University of Illinois Chicago, left federal court Tuesday with his mother and attorney. He was placed on house arrest, in his mother's custody. He will be allowed to leave home to attend school or religious services, to seek health care, or for matters related to the federal case.

Authorities say Dean posted the threat after prosecutors released video showing Laquan McDonald's shooting death.

The university canceled all classes and activities, as a precaution. Classes were back to normal today.

One Dean family member downplayed the threats as a youthful mistake.
