University Historian Receiving Prestigious National Award

CHICAGO (AP) -- A University of Illinois at Chicago historian is receiving a prestigious national award.

The school says Barbara Ransby is the recipient of the American Studies Association's 2018 Angela Y. Davis Prize for Public Scholarship.

The award recognizes scholars or their work that "explicitly aims to educate the lay public, influence policies, or in other ways seeks to address inequities in imaginative, practical and applicable forms."

Ransby is a professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and holds faculty appointments in African American studies, gender and women's studies, and history.

She will be honored on Friday at a ceremony during the association's annual meeting in Atlanta.
