U.S. Education Secretary Returns To Chicago For Anti-Violence March

(CBS) -- More than 100 people marched with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan through the streets of the south side Auburn-Gresham neighborhood Friday night, calling for an end to the violence that has gripped certain Chicago neighborhoods.

"It hurts my heart that I have to be here, but that's the reality," said Duncan, who was invited to return to Chicago for the march by the activist pastor of St. Sabina's Roman Catholic Church, the Rev. Michael Pfleger.

Earlier this week, 13 people were murdered and 32 wounded in shootings in Chicago during a 36-hour period, the deadliest stretch the city has seen since 2003.

"We have to create a climate where kids feel cared about," Duncan said.

He said tougher gun laws are also needed.

Duncan then participated in Pfleger's weekly march against violence from St. Sabina's, at 1210 W. 78th Pl., to 78th Street and Hermitage Avenue.

Also joining the marchers were Ariel Capital Management Chairman/CEO John Rogers and U.S. Senate candidate Andrea Zopp, a former Chicago Urban League president and Cook County prosecutor.
