U. Of C. Math Tutoring Program To Expand At CPS

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A math tutoring program launched at Harper High School in the Englewood neighborhood last year is being expanded to 21 public schools.

WBBM Newsradio Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports the program schedules boys who were in danger of dropping out of school for rigorous tutoring in small groups.

Roseanna Ander, executive director of the University of Chicago's Urban Education Lab, said the program has been catching on.

"We knew that there was certainly a need, in terms of the kids showing up in high school very, very far behind," she said. "It was unclear whether an extra hour – for all intents and purposes – per day of math was going to be well-received by the students, and what's really been extraordinary is that the students really have been receptive."

Anders said, in a short time, the students have shown great progress in math test scores. That's why they want to expand the program to approximately 700 students, and keep studying the results.
