1 Man Killed, 1 Wounded In Bishop Ford Expressway Shooting

CALUMET CITY, Ill. (CBS) -- Police late Wednesday were investigating a shooting that left one man dead and another wounded on the Bishop Ford Freeway.

Illinois State Police were called at 10:17 a.m. for the shooting on the northbound Bishop Ford south of the Steel Bridge near 138th Street.

Two vehicles were headed north on the expressway and people inside each exchanged gunfire, state police said.

One of the cars lost control, hit a wall, and flipped over, police said. The 48-year-old man who had been driving that car was rushed to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Two passengers in that car – a 23-year-old woman and a 4-year-old girl – were not injured, state police said.

The 34-year-old man who had been driving the other car was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.

The right two lanes of the northbound Bishop Ford was closed just after the shooting, and all northbound lanes north of Sibley Boulevard were closed at 12:06 p.m.

All lanes reopened by 2:30 p.m.

The shooting remained under investigation late Wednesday. Anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information is asked to call Illinois State Police at (847) 294-4400.Callers may remain anonymous.
