(CBS) -- Two people have been shot, one fatally, Friday night in a Magnificent Mile retail store, in an incident that is being characterized as domestic-related.

A gunman reportedly walked up to a cosmetics counter on the second floor of Nordstrom, 55 E. Grand Ave., around 8:30 p.m. and shot a female seasonal employee before turning the gun on himself.  The Chicago Fire Department said the male died of his injuries, and the woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Nordstrom is located at The Shops At North Bridge, a "vertical mall" along Chicago's premier retail strip. The violence came as swarms of visitors were in downtown Chicago for post-Thanksgiving, Black Friday shopping. Nordstrom was crowded, a half-hour from its 9 p.m. closing time, CBS 2's Mike Parker reports.

Authorities quickly conveyed the domestic nature of the shooting and said no one else had been injured. That did little to calm people at the mall, some of whom panicked in the aftermath of the shooting and hid in storage rooms and bathrooms.

Nordstrom said in a statement the store will remain closed until further notice.

"We are actively working with the Chicago Police Department, as this is an open and ongoing investigation," the statement said in part. "Our prayers are with our employee who was involved and those who witnessed this tragic event."
