Woman, 81, Shot On Eve Of Daughter's Funeral

(CBS) -- An 81-year-old grandmother who was set to bury one of her own children this weekend was one of two people injured in a shooting Friday evening in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

The woman was shot in the wrist and a 34-year-old male was shot in the hip around 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Carpenter during a possible drive-by, according to Chicago Police News Affairs. The two were on a porch when gunfire erupted.

Both victims were taken to Advocate Christ Hospital.

Family members identified the senior as Iola Burress, who lives at the address where the shooting occurred. She was struck multiple times, including in the stomach, and was expected to have surgery Saturday, a family member tells CBS 2 in an email.

The man who was injured was identified as Sylvester Burress, a relative from Michigan.

Earlier on Friday, Iola Burress had been at the visitation of her daughter, who died of natural causes. The daughter's funeral was scheduled for Saturday, family members told CBS 2 at the scene.
