GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- Two men were killed early Thursday in a fiery crash in Gary, Ind.

Gary Police Cpl. Gabrielle King said officers responded to a crash at 5th and Calhoun around 5 a.m.

When crews arrived, they found an SUV engulfed in flames, and a second vehicle that had sustained extensive damage. The two vehicles appeared to have collided head-on, but investigators were still trying to determine exactly how the crash happened.

The drivers of both vehicles were trapped in their cars, and were pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness said one of the victims lives just blocks from where the crash occurred. He said relatives of that victim heard about the crash and came running to the scene.

"I could see the grief that struck them when they found out who it was," Larry Tillman said. "It was a heartfelt scene; the loss of their loved one."

The Lake County Coroner's office said it has not positively identified either man as of late Thursday morning.
