One Killed, One Critically Injured After Wall Collapse At Ford Plant On South Side

UPDATED: 4:42 p.m.

(CBS) -- A contract worker was killed and a Ford employee critically injured after a wall collapse at a Ford Motor assembly plant in the South Deering neighborhood on the South Side Saturday morning.

A contract company was performing work on an eight foot by eight foot wall concrete wall in an area of the plant that is under construction.

A large section of the wall fell on a 45-year-old man, who was transported to Trinity Hospital where he later died, Chicago Police said. The Cook County medical examiner identified the man as John J. Jaloway of Carol Stream.

A 48-year-old man was transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition after slipping and falling on the concrete, according to the Fire Department. Ford says that the man who died was a contract worker and the man who was critically injured is a Ford employee.

"We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. We are cooperating fully with the investigation," a Ford spokeswoman said in a statement.

More than 4,000 employees work at the 2.8 million square foot facility at 12600 S Torrence Ave.
