Two Chicago Cops Injured By Thrown Firecracker

(CBS) – Two police officers were injured Sunday when someone threw a powerful firecracker at their police vehicle and the firework exploded.

The two officers were sitting in a squad car at 75th and Dorchester around 4:20 p.m. when another vehicle approached, police said. Someone in the other vehicle threw an M-80 or M-100 at the police car, and it bounced off the windshield and detonated, Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. John Escalante tells CBS 2.

The explosive damaged the police vehicle's undercarriage, making it inoperable. The police officers inside suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including nausea and ringing in the ears, Escalante said.

"This is a pyrotechnic device, an M-series device that, had it landed in the car, could have caused some very severe injuries to these officers" Escalante said.

Both officers were treated and released at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, he said.

No arrests were reported.
