Two Men Charged In Attempted Robbery, Shooting Of Off-Duty Police Officer

(CBS) -- Two men are facing charges after police say they tried to rob and kill an off-duty cop, reports CBS 2's Jeremy Ross.

Police say 19-year-old Jordan Bailey and 19-year-old Abdourahmane Soumare were the subjects of a man hunt last Friday. Bailey faces several charges including attempted first degree murder.

The crime scene unfolded early Friday morning in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Investigators say a 41-year-old Chicago Police officer was sitting in his personal car while off duty and the two accused men tried to rob him, attempting to open his car door.

Fearing for his safety, the officer drove off and was shot once. The bullet hit him in the chest and went through his body.

The cop was able to drive until he could flag down a squad and those officers drove him to a hospital. The 41-year-old was later transferred to another hospital. Fortunately, the combination of care and where the bullet hit allowed him to survive.

The officer is an eight-year veteran of the department who has received several departmental awards.

Bailey and Soumare were ordered held without bond in a court appearance on Sunday.
