Tugboat Capsizes, Sinks On Calumet River

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were rescued from the Calumet River, after a tugboat capsized Wednesday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard said, shortly after 7 p.m., the crew on the 57-foot tugboat Bonnie G. Selvick tried to turn the boat around while headed south on the river near the 106th Street Bridge.

While making the turn, the tug rolled over, capsized, and sank within minutes.

The two crew members were able to swim to shore, and contact the Coast Guard. A rescue boat picked them up and determined neither crew member was injured.

The Coast Guard deployed booms around the boat to contain any fuel or oil that might have spilled into the river until a salvage crew can remove the boat from the water.
