Trump Victory Creates Unease Among Chicago's Minority Communities
(CBS) -- For millions of minorities like American Muslims, Hispanics and members of LGBT communities, the presidential election results are tough to take in.
That's because of the choice of rhetoric Trump used against them during his campaign.
CBS 2's Sandra Torres reports.
"He's offended every aspect of my life," says Yasmin Sheriff.
"I'm Mexican American and Muslim American," she says, so, she explains, she is "immediately feeling hurt shocked."
Sheriff says she's concerned for the communities she represents.
Organizations like CAIR, which advocates for Muslims, pledge to work harder to protect its own.
"We don't organize around fear, but we need to be cautious," Director Ahmed Rehab says. "We have already instructed mosques to beef (up) their security, make sure their surveillance cameras are working, to have volunteers that can look around and monitor for suspicious behavior."
Members of the LGBT community like state Rep. Greg Harris have similar fears.
"We want to be sure that people know they are welcomed and valued in this community," he says.
He adds: "(Trump) is our president-elect, but that does not absolve us from our responsibility to go out there and fight for the issues and positions that we believe in."
