Emanuel: Trump's Slam Of Chicago Schools Is 'Fake News'
(CBS) – Mayor Emanuel on Wednesday defended Chicago Public Schools against disparaging remarks made by President Donald Trump a day earlier.
The president took a swipe at CPS on Tuesday while answering a question about education, in a meeting with business executives.
Trump said it's sad to see what's happening in the country. He noted some say things are better better, but added "the numbers in New York, the numbers in Chicago are very rough." He didn't explain what he meant.
Mayor Emanuel said Trump's remarks were "fake news" -- one of the president's favorite phrases. He says he's sending the White House copies of two studies that show great improvements for the Chicago schools.
"It would be helpful if we didn't run down our kids, we did not run down our schools, did not run down our teachers or our principals, but held them up," Emanuel said. "Because they are leading the country in ACT gains, they're leading the country in graduation gains. They're leading the country in math gains. They're leading the country in reading gains."
