Train Engineer Spots Extra-Alarm Blaze In Aurora

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It has been a busy month for fires in Aurora, with another extra-alarm fire overnight.

Aurora Fire Department Battalion Chief Ed Oros said the three-alarm fire was called in by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway engineer whose train had passed Mas Pallets at 50 miles an hour around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

With stacks and stacks of pallets and wood for making pallets stored all over the property at 1302 Plain Avenue, Oros said the fire would have been worse had it not been for the engineer.

"Oh, yeah. It definitely would have been a lot larger, but we were lucky that he saw it," he said.

This was, at least the third extra alarm fire in Aurora in the past couple of weeks.

"It's probably one of the busiest Junes in a long time," Oros said.

The cause of the fire at Mas Pallets is under investigation.
