Thunderstorms Down Trees, Knock Out Power

(CBS) -- A thunderstorm moving through the Chicago area Monday afternoon and brought heavy rainfall and high winds.

The storms prompted a severe thunderstorm warning from the National Weather Service which expired at 2:30 p.m.
ComEd reported 30,000 customers were without power, mostly on the South Side and south suburbs. NIPSCO reports the storm knocked out power to nearly 4,000 customers.

Ground stops at both Midway and O'Hare airports in response to the poor conditions. The ground stops have been lifted, but both airports are still experiencing some minor delays.

In addition to torrential rains, the storm brought strong wind gusts of up to 50 mph which led to downed trees. One Andersonville resident sent photos showing downed trees and branches landing on cars on Balmoral between Ravenswood and Broadway.
