ELGIN, Ill. (CBS) -- Three boys were due to appear in Kane County juvenile court Monday morning, charged with beating an 87-year-old man with his golf clubs.

WBBM Newsradio's Steve Miller reports two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old are accused of beating the man at a park in Elgin over the weekend.

Elgin Police Cmdr. Dan O'Shea said the boys struck the man in the head and face with his own golf clubs.

"I don't want to say it shocks the conscience, but it's ... out of the ordinary, and you hope it never happens," O'Shea said. "Anytime it's the elderly or children involved, it takes it to a new level, and everybody wants to never see it happen again."

The boys have been charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery.

O'Shea said the 87-year-old man was treated for his injuries, but did not need to be hospitalized.

He managed to make it to his car after being attacked early Saturday morning, and gave a description which helped police arrest the boys about half an hour later.
