Neighbor Feud Ends With 3 Shot, 1 Fatally, On South Side

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One person was killed and two others injured after an argument between neighbors escalated into a shooting involving an off-duty police officer Friday afternoon on the South Side.

The incident happened in the 8400 block of South Carpenter in the Gresham neighborhood around 2:40 p.m.

Two women, including the officer's wife, Cathryn Anthony-Hill, were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

The other injured woman, Hazel Jones, was an elderly neighbor in her late 80s.

The incident began when the police officer's neighbor, identified as Joe Huff, 87, began arguing with the officer and the officer's wife.

Huff then went back to his house and came back with a shotgun and shot Anthony-Hill in the arm.

The officer, who has not been identified, then fatally shot Huff.

Huff's wife, Hazel Jones, who witnessed the shooting, then picked up her dead husband's gun.

At that point, the police officer told Jones to drop the weapon, and when she refused, he shot her in the hand and leg.
