Three Men Found Dead In Avondale Building Last Month Identified

(STMW) -- Three men who were found frozen to death in a vacant Northwest Side Avondale neighborhood last month have been identified.

Martin Kaziemierz, 73; Sergei Subchuk, 36; and Nikolai Chtefan, 63, were all discovered dead in the building at 3310 N. Harding about 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 12, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Autopsies found all three died of hypothermia due to cold exposure, with alcohol intoxication a contributing factor, according to the medical examiner's office.
Their deaths were ruled accidents.

Chtefan was recently identified by a family member, but the medical examiner's office is searching for family members of Kaziemierz and Subchuk. Anyone with information about the men is asked to call Steven Smith at (312) 997-3002.

Authorities said at the time the men may have been homeless.

At the time, the deaths raised the confirmed number of cold-related fatalities this season in Cook County to 14, according to the medical examiner's office. As of Tuesday, there have been 18 cold deaths in the county.
