Then And Now: Sunbathing Along Lake Shore Drive

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Now, this strip of Lake Shore Drive is filled with bikers and runners.

Then, in the 1960s, it was a sunbathing paradise.

The image below is from the William Brubaker collection at the University Of Chicago.

It was taken in 1962 and shows the apartments at 860-880 North Lake Shore drive. (Click on the image to enlarge.)

Brubaker (1926-2002) was president of the Chicago-based architectural firm of Perkins & Will. He was known for his work in designing schools, Brubaker also photographed himself in and around Chicago. The collection at UIC, which are digitized copies of Brubaker's slide collection, which were taken from the early 1960s through the mid-1990s.
