The Origins Of Hawk Harrelson's 'Will To Win' Line

(CBS) In a nod to his old-school demeanor and curious disdain for new-school sabermetics, one of White Sox television announcer Hawk Harrelson's favorite lines is to cite a player's and/or team's "will to win."

He loves a "will to win" so much that he cites it as his favorite statistic -- even though we've never quite figured out how to quantitatively measure a "will to win" because, you know, it's not a statistic.

Where did Hawk get it from? Well, with some help from avid listener Bill, it looks like Hawk's favorite statistic can be traced back to at least the 1960s. These two images come from 1960 Baseball Magazine, which has a feature on Dodgers great Wally Moon and his "will to win."
