The Cubs Offered David Price A 7-Year, $161-Million Deal

(CBS) Before the Red Sox signed left-hander David Price to a $217-million deal, the Cubs' offer for him was for seven years and $161 million, sources told 670 The Score's Bruce Levine.

Price deal with Boston was for seven years and came out to $31 million in average annual value. Chicago's offer was for $23 million annually. St. Louis had the second-most lucrative offer, according to reports.

Price, 30, went 18-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 2015 in time split with the Tigers and Blue Jays. He had 225 strikeouts in 220 1/3 innings. He has a career 3.09 ERA and is a five-time All-Star.

After missing out on Price, the Cubs signed right-hander John Lackey to a two-year, $32-million deal.

Chicago was always wary of the total cost for right-hander Jeff Samardzija, who agreed to a five-year, $90-million deal with San Francisco on Saturday. The Cubs' offer to Samardzija matched the $18 million in average annual value he got from the Giants, but it was for fewer years.
