The Bernstein Brief: Trip West Is Well-Timed For Bulls

(CBS) Their schedule looks daunting, but the timing is just right.

Upcoming games at Golden State, the Lakers and Phoenix form the first half of a six-game road trip for a Chicago Bulls team that could use the getaway.  They'll return home in the middle before leaving again for Houston, but this affords them the chance to tamp down some midseason silliness.

Forget individual outcomes for a moment. The last week had national reports of Tom Thibodeau's job insecurity, then Jeff Van Gundy ranting on national TV and John Paxson yelling at a beat reporter. It's a down time for sports headlines in general outside of the NFL's latest docu-drama, so there's more oxygen for such fires.

The road west means less attention to all of it, with 9:30 tip times locally and only a handful of reporters in tow. It's back to the basketball more than the backstabbing, regardless of what's on the scoreboard.

Not that some winning wouldn't help, however.
