The Bernstein Brief: Tough Day For St. Louis Fans

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) I'm not really the type that revels in schadenfreude when fans elsewhere are suffering, but if that's indeed your thing, you must be enjoying what's radiating out of St. Louis this morning.

The Cardinals fell to the Cubs on Wednesday to lose yet another series to the division leaders and now already sit eight games in back of them in third place. And they dropped the deciding game of the series despite having the tying and winning runs on base with nobody out in the ninth, only to see two strikeouts and a comebacker to the mound.

Meanwhile, the Blues are again not going to win the Stanley Cup. Even in a year that saw them oust the defending champions and spurred talk of this St. Louis squad finally being different for the perennial losers, it turned out just the same after a mostly uncompetitive 5-2 loss to San Jose in Game 6. So the Sharks will be in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time, while the Blues can add another season to the title drought.

But with NFL teams now on the field in offseason programs, hope can arrive in the form of draft classes unveiled and new free agent faces debuting as they gear up for training camp.

Oh, wait...
