The Bernstein Brief: Savor The Viewing Pain Of Bears-Saints

By Dan Bernstein-

(CBS) There can be pleasure found in despising something, particulary when it's as uniquely awful as the Bears.

We will choose tonight to punish our eyes with football, our ears with Jon Gruden and our souls with consideration of what is to come for a team so thoroughly beyond reasonable hope. So make our time worth it.

Bring it on.

Bring your false starts, blocked extra points, 12 men in the huddle and tipped interceptions. Bring the failed screen pass chucked to the ground, the free releases given to receivers, the illegal block in the back and the self-maiming sack dance.

Give us the cutaway to a bewildered Marc Trestman after Jay Cutler sees everyone lined up wrong, throws his hands up, turns around and calls an angry timeout. And we want the kickoff taken out of the very back of the end zone and returned all the way to the nine.

Those of us who have to watch have found a perverse way to appreciate this shambling zombie of a season, by savoring the pain.

Are we ready for some football, you ask?

At some point.
