The Bernstein Brief: Illinois Athletic Department Needs A Housecleaning

By Dan Bernstein--

(CBS) The athletic department at the University of Illinois needs a housecleaning.

Not an internal investigation, not the hiring of a friendly law firm to look at everything "independently" and not with any kind of secrecy for this public institution.

On the heels of multiple allegations of mistreatment against football coach Tim Beckman, news of a second scandal arrived Monday, this time involving the women's basketball team that's led by coach Matt Bollant. One assistant coach -- Mike Divilbiss -- has already left after former players' accusations of verbal and emotional abuse of players, as well as mistreatment of injuries. The university has found no violations of law, NCAA rules or university policies and is continuing to evaluate the allegations, a spokesperson said.

Still, it's time to conduct all the reviews necessary for proper compliance -- and also get on with disinfecting this place.

Start the search immediately for a new athletic director if it hasn't begun already.
