Chicago Weekend Shootings: 8 dead, 35 wounded in shootings over Thanksgiving weekend

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least eight people are dead, and 35 others are wounded in shootings during the Thanksgiving weekend in the city. The ages of the victims range from 13 to 60.

In the first shooting of the holiday weekend, a 19-year-old man was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday inside a home in the 8100 block of South Peoria Street.

Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the gunshot wound might have been self-inflicted.

Two men were shot in the 9000 block of South Racine Avenue on Thanksgiving Day.

Police said around 4:44 p.m., the victims, 34 and 40, were struck in the body by gunfire.

The 34-year-old victim was transported to Little Company of Mary Medical Center and the 40-year-old was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center - both in good condition.

Later in the evening, a 25-year-old man was shot inside a vehicle in the 8000 block of South Vernon Avenue.

The victim was inside the vehicle around 7:54 p.m. when he was struck in the head by gunfire, police said.

He was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Two teens were also shot while traveling in a vehicle around 9:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of West Roosevelt Road.

The victims, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were riding in a vehicle when they heard gunshots and felt pain.

The boy was struck in the leg and back and the girl was struck in the back and neck. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.

They were unable to provide any further details about the shooting.

Minutes later, a 38-year-old man was found unresponsive on a sidewalk, in the 100 block of West 112th Street around 9:18 p.m.

Police say the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the face and abdomen and was pronounced dead on the scene.

A 21-year-old man is recovering in the hospital after he was shot in the leg during an argument in the Loop just after 2 a.m. Saturday. Police say it happened inside the La Quinta Inn on Franklin Street. No one saw the shooter leave the hotel, and at one point SWAT officers responded to help search for him. Police were still investigating Saturday evening. 

In another Saturday incident, a 40-year-old man is dead. He was shot in the head while standing in the street in the 4700 block of West Harrison just before 8 p.m., police said. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition but later pronounced dead. Area Four detectives are investigating. 

Two teens were shot in the 11300 block of South May Street around 5:50 p.m. Saturday. The boys, 16 and 13, were in a vehicle parked on the street when an unknown suspect approached. The gunman fired shots at both victims - striking the 16-year-old victim in the right arm and the 13-year-old victim in the left hand. Both victims were transported to Christ Hospital in fair condition. 

In other shootings between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Monday:  

  • At 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, a 57-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the left knee in the 1200 block of North Larrabee Street. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.
  • At 9:19 p.m. Wednesday, a 27-year-old man was shot in the hip in the 3800 block of West Wilcox Street. Police said the shooter ran off after the shooting, and the victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
  • At 10:03 p.m. Wednesday, a 14-year-old boy was standing in the 200 block of South Western Avenue, when someone in a black sedan shot him in the hand. The boy was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, an 18-year-old man was walking in the 4200 block of West 5th Avenue, when someone in a dark SUV shot him in the ankle. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 11:14 p.m. Wednesday, a 30-year-old woman was standing on a porch in the 4400 block of West Adams Street, when two gunmen started shooting. She suffered a gunshot wound to the back, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
  • At 2:14 p.m. Friday, a 14-year-old boy was riding a Divvy bike in the 9900 block of South Yates Boulevard, when someone on foot started shooting. The boy, who was not the intended victim, was shot in the thigh, left foot, and buttocks, and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.
  • At 2:15 p.m. Friday, a 21-year-old man was standing in the 200 block of South Central Park Avenue, when someone walked up and shot him in the left leg and right thigh. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 3:15 p.m. Friday, a 15-year-old boy was in front of a home in the 700 block of North Hamlin Avenue, when someone in a group across the street started shooting. The boy was shot in the foot, and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At 8:24 p.m. Friday, a 41-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were walking through a vacant lot in the 2300 block of East 100th Street, when someone in a black SUV started shooting. The woman, later identified as Kristen Carr by the Medical Examiner's Office, was shot in the hip, and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The boy was shot in the shoulder, and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.
  • At 12:15 a.m. Saturday, the victims were in the 12700 block of South Halsted Street at a gathering of approximately 30 people when an unknown offender began shooting inside the location. Two men, 34 and 36, were shot in the head and were transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center where they later died. A third victim, 27, was shot in the back and was transported to U of C hospital in good condition. A fourth victim self-transported to Roseland Community Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the lower left leg in good condition from the same incident location.
  • At 12:30 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a person shot in the 6800 block of South Prairie Avenue and discovered an unresponsive man lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was shot in the head and chest and was pronounced dead on the scene. No one is in custody and no further information is known at this time.
  • At 1 a.m. Saturday, a man was standing on the sidewalk, in the 9100 block of South Ashland Avenue, when he heard shots and immediately felt pain. The victim was shot in the groin area and was transported to U of C hospital in good condition.
  • At 1:10 Saturday, a man, 41, was walking on the sidewalk, in the 5600 block of West Fullerton Avenue, when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right hand and self-transported to Community First hospital in good condition.
  • At 3:40 a.m. Saturday, a 60-year-old man was in an argument with another man inside a residence, in the 7800 block of South Honore Street, when the offender produced a handgun and shot at the victim multiple times. The offender dropped the handgun and then fled the residence in an unknown direction but was placed into custody in the immediate area by responding officers. The victim was shot in the chest, stomach, and right thigh and was transported by Chicago fire to Christ hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
  • At 10:45 a.m. Saturday, a 34-year-old man was outside, in the 11200 block of South Martin Luther King Drive, when approximately three unknown offenders began shooting at the victim. The victim was transported to U of C hospital in an unknown condition with gunshot wounds to the left hand, left thigh, and both sides of the body.
  • At 12:04 p.m. Saturday, in the 6500 block of South King Drive, a 23 year old man was shot in the left buttocks, and a grazed wound to the head. The victim was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. The victim got into an argument with a known suspect who then fired shots -striking the victim. 
  • At 3:50 p.m. Saturday in the 2300 block of South Winchester, a 32-year-old man was inside a home when he was shot in the back by an unknown person. He was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 4:53 p.m. Saturday in the 2500 block of West 62nd Street, a 27-year-old man was shot in the back and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. 
  • At 6:17 p.m. Saturday in the 6600 block of South Washtenaw a 17-year-old boy was on the sidewalk when someone pulled up in a vehicle and someone inside started shooting. the boy was shot in the back and transported to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 9:24 p.m. Saturday in the 2100 block of North McVicker, an 18-year-old was driving when he was shot in the left leg. He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in good condition. 
  • At 10:17 p.m. Saturday in the 9200 block of South Indiana, a 24-year-old man was walking out of his home when someone approached and started shooting at him. The vicim was shot in the right buttocks and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. 
  • At 11:01 p.m. Saturday in the 2200 blcok of West 23rd Place, a 22-year-old man was on the sidewalk when a white sedan approached and someone inside started shooting. The victim was shot in the left forearm and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 2:21 a.m. Sunday in the 2500 block of South Michigan Avenue, a man, 18, was dropped off at Insight hospital with a gunshot wound to the right forearm. The victim was very uncooperative with officers about the incident and refused to answer any questions.
  • At 9:06 a.m. Sunday in the 4400 block of West Gladys Avenue, a 40-year-old man was outside when he heard shots, then felt pain. He was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition with one gunshot wound to his head.
