CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 17-year-old boy was shot early Friday while sitting in the back of an SUV near the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Police said the boy was sitting in the back seat of a Hyundai Santa Fe on the bridge over the Dan Ryan at the corner of Roosevelt Road and Union Street shortly after midnight when shots were fired at the vehicle.

The driver stopped about two miles away, at 18th Street and Calumet Avenue, and realized the 17-year-old had been shot in the chest. The boy was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

The SUV had been riddled by bullets, including holes in the passenger's side window and door, and the front windshield.

Police searched the original shooting scene to collect evidence.
